How to define a list of web content keywords for your web page, blog post, or landing page
In my article on web content writing tips, I mentioned keeping to one topic per online content piece you write. Once you have an idea what you are writing about, it pays to take some time choosing some web content keywords for SEO.
Instead of pulling these keyword phrases out of thin air, use these keyword optimization tips:
- Jot down four or five phrases that you want to rank for. The phrases should be specific and not broad. For example, you may want to write about back pain. That’s a very broad focus keyword that would have a lot of competition. Better choices might be “exercises for back pain relief” or “causes of back pain” or “reducing back pain with massage”. These longer keyword phrases are often called long tail keywords.
- Type your ideas into Google’s search box and see what suggestions appear in the drop down list. Identify a few suggestions that make sense for your content.
- Use a keyword analysis tool to further hone your keyword phrases. Google’s Keyword Planner is one free option. You’ll want phrases that includes words that people search for and that have lower competition.
- If you are writing about one of your services or products, consider adding geographic or demographic terms to your keyword phrases. For example, you may want to use back pain relief in Chicago or back exercises for golfers.
Remember that the phrases you choose will be used in your writing. So, they shouldn’t be forced or unnatural.
